What Jesus Knows

Dr. James MacDonald

Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer” (Psalm 19:12-14).

In Revelation 2:2, Jesus told the believers in Ephesus, “I know your works.” The letters to five of the seven churches in Revelation 2 and 3 all begin with those words I know. So, let’s begin there, too. Jesus Christ knows everything about our church. Everything! He knows everything about you. He knows everything about me. Nothing needs to be explained to Him. We don’t inform Jesus. We don’t fill Him in. He’s not looking for any updates. To Christ, we are an open book.

But there are three serious trouble spots in us that we tend to think are hidden which are in Christ’s plain sight:

  1. Secret actions—We can easily think, “Well yeah. I do have some bad habits. There are some things that I do that no one knows except for me…and Jesus.”  That might be the whole list—just you and Him. Yet if you know He knows and that knowledge doesn’t affect your actions, you have a serious problem with willful disobedience.
  2. Private conversations—We can also think,“Well I probably shouldn’t have said that about the church, about the pastor, or about the program. But it was just me and her.  We’re the only ones who know what was said…if I don’t count Jesus.” “It was just me and my dad on the phone. No one else was listening…except the Lord.” Yet if the fact that Jesus participates in every private conversation you have doesn’t affect your words, you have a problem with careless disobedience.
  3. Wrong motives of pride and jealousy—We can even think, “I’ll go to church, but I’m not happy about it. No one has to know that inside I’m privately protesting this!”  Well, your attitude is not as hidden as you think it is. Jesus is privy to your conversations with yourself! He knows your problem with internalized disobedience.

King David had an effective cleansing prayer that ought to become a regular habit in our lives. He understood that God always knows more about us than we realize about ourselves! If we suspect we are blindly (or even deliberately) practicing self-destructive spiritual behavior, we can use his prayer to invite God to set us right. With this in mind, re-read today’s Scripture passage.

I had a B-Ball game this morning, had 19 rebounds and 20 points, we are still undefeated. Today God taught me to keep His commandments. He doesn't force us to do anything unless we desire. Luke 9:23 And he said to him, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up the cross daily and follow me."
