Looking to the Lord

Dr. James MacDonald

The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant. My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for he will pluck my feet out of the net. Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted (Psalm 25:14-16).

King David wrote, "My eyes are ever toward the Lord" (v.15). Another English version replaces "ever" with "continually." Again, "My eyes are continually toward the Lord for He will pluck my feet out of the net" (nasb). This is the focus now—trusting God. My eyes are on the Lord. My expectation is not myself. My wisdom is not my own. My network is not going to save me. My investments are not going to come through. My résumé will not be enough. My powers of persuasion will not overcome. My eyes are on the Lord. As Psalm 121:1-2 puts it, "I look to the hills. From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth."

Question: Where are you looking for the help that you need? Think about your life for a moment. Where is the focus of your hope for help?

Psalm 25:15 again, summarizes life's dangers as "the net." In the biblical times, as in places in the world today, game was trapped in various ways. One approach involved digging a hole, putting a net over the opening, and waiting for animals to fall in. He would not see the pit because it was now camouflaged. The animal might be able to get out of the hole, but now the big net closes the trap. David had a sense—living in a cave—that he was trapped; he couldn't get out. Absalom and an army were marching toward him like a closing net.

I'm going to start out by telling you first what God has taught me today. It's Faith (Hebrews 11:6) Without Faith it is impossible to please Him. Faith is a tremendously active principle that always puts Jesus Christ first. The life of Faith says Lord, you have said it, it appears to be irrational but I'm going to step out boldly trusting in your Word!
